The spider is the easy part. The web is what takes the nerve — threads cut so fine across the oval frame that they look spun rather than carved, radiating out and then circling back, with the spider sitting dead centre exactly where it means to be. Around it this hand-carved wooden backgammon set runs flowing scrollwork inside a braided border, so the whole lid is worked from edge to edge.
It is not a comfortable image, and that is the appeal. A spider on its web is patience made visible: it does not chase anything, it builds a position and then waits for the game to come to it. Anybody who has been slowly, politely dismantled across a backgammon board knows that feeling from the losing side. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is where you find out which of you is the spider tonight. Carry it in by the cut-out handle and set it down.
