Russian Eagle and Flag Backgammon Set with Handle — Handmade in Armenia

The double-headed eagle fills one rope-rimmed roundel of this Russian backgammon set and a waving tricolour, painted white, blue and red, fills the other, with a carved leaf knot between them and a rope border round the lid. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

The flag is the only colour on the board; the eagle and the rest of the lid are carved in one dark tone on cross-hatched grounds, and the reverse carries an inlaid chequered panel between two leaf-scroll cartouches.

Inside, an inlaid map of Russia with its major cities named sits in each half between fleur-tipped inlaid points, with scalloped bar edges, side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. The pale and dark checkers and the carrying bag are photographed.

Is the flag carved in plain wood? No — the old listing said the flag was cut without colour, but the photos show it painted white, blue and red as a waving banner. The eagle is unpainted relief. The maps of Russia inlaid inside were never mentioned before.
