A crown is carved at each end of this luxury chess set, between ribbon banners that run round all four sides, with a volute scroll and a carved star disc at every corner — all cut from pale maple. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces topped in cast bronze and a felt-lined inside.

This is the wooden chess set where the frame is sculpture. The scrolls at the corners curl out in the round, the ribbons are undercut so they seem to lift off the stippled ground, and the crowns sit in the middle of the top and bottom edge with a banner beneath each one. The squares are inlaid maple and walnut with the coordinates carved beside them, and the pale wood holds every edge of the carving sharp.

The pieces are turned in two woods, pale and red-brown, and each one carries a cast bronze crown or finial with a bronze collar at the base — the same idea as the border, not a borrowed set. The board folds on bronze hinges over two felt-lined wells for the pieces and goes in its bag.

The scrolls, ribbons, crowns and star discs are all cut from the maple itself — the ribbons are undercut and the scrolls stand proud of the surface — with the ground stippled by hand.
