Diamond lattice covers the whole of this round chess set with storage, from the rope-twist rim in to the square inlaid field at its centre, with a curved felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. It is 60 cm / 23.6″ across, 11 cm / 4.3″ high, handmade in Armenia from beech.

A wooden chess set built as a broad disc. The field of dark and pale squares sits square in the middle, ringed by brass coordinate roundels, and everything outside it is carved: the lattice runs unbroken to the edge, a rope twist is cut along the rim, and the sides carry a fine repeating texture all the way round. The drawer front curves with the base and hangs a brass pendant pull.

Pull the drawer and the pieces are there — 16 light, 16 dark, turned in wood and laid on black felt — so the board stays out on the table with nothing else beside it. At 60 cm across the squares are generous, and the low profile keeps it easy on a coffee table or a desk.
