Both faces of this luxury backgammon set are carved edge to edge: one holds a fluted sun inside a ring of looped petals, the other a disc of woven interlace round a star, and deep scrollwork fills the walnut on either side of each. A cut-out carry handle sits in each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set with no plain wood left on the outside. The scrolls are undercut where they cross so light gets beneath them, the ground between is stippled, the outline is shaped in gentle scallops rather than sawn straight, and the two round centrepieces stand a full finger deep. It closes on brass clasps and lifts by either handle.

Inside is bare walnut with the figure showing: points scored as single lines with arrowhead tips, a round lined disc with a flower at its heart in each half, a row of half-round scallops on a stippled band at each end and a trough beneath for the checkers.
