Perched Peacock and Rayed Sun Backgammon Set — Handmade in Armenia

A peacock sits on a branch inside the rope-bordered oval of this carved backgammon set, its long tail hanging below the perch in rows of eye-spots, while the lid's other face carries a sun ringed with flame-shaped rays in an oval of its own — both on a cross-hatched ground with leaf scrolls curling in from the corners. A cut-out carry handle runs through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Set the wooden backgammon set down either way and a carved oval faces up — bird one way, sun the other — with no chequered panel on this board.

Open, the halves are inlaid in pale wood: fleur-tipped points, a fine-line peacock in one half and a sun with pointed rays in the other, plus side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. Thirty-two beech and walnut checkers and dice are included.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Are the peacock and sun side by side? No — the old listing put them together in one oval, but the peacock is on one outer face and the sun on the other, and the frames are leaf scrolls rather than flowering scrollwork. The old copy also listed a carrying bag that is not photographed, so it is not included here.
