A fluted disc like an opened fan sits at the centre of this luxury backgammon set, and round it run two rings of leaf fronds and paired scrolls, a beaded band and a flower boss in every corner — carved in deep relief across a 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ walnut board, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that reads as architecture: the fronds are cut as long pointed leaves with veins, the scrolls curl in pairs between them, the flutes of the disc catch light like the pleats of a fan, and everything stands off a hand-stippled ground inside a plain moulded frame. Closed, the board shows half the disc; opened lid-up, the whole wheel.

Turn it over for the game and the walnut is left as it grew: striped and oiled, the points scored in fine lines with arrow tips, a flower drawn in each half, scalloped rails and troughs along the ends for the checkers and dice. Brass clasps hold it shut.
