Rows of rhombic pyramids cover both faces of this luxury backgammon set — each rhombus raised to a low ridge with four sloping facets, meeting its neighbours edge to edge so the whole lid becomes a faceted skin of walnut inside a plain moulded frame. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that moves when you do: every facet takes the light at a different angle, so the rows brighten and darken as you walk round the table, and the walnut's own figure runs on through the pattern. The pyramids are cut low and crisp rather than deep, the frame is left smooth, and brass clasps hold the two halves shut.

Open, the walnut is plain and figured: points drawn as looped arrow outlines, a knot of four rhombi at the centre of each half, arched scallops at the ends and a trough beneath them. Pale and dark turned checkers, a pair of dice and a cloth carrying bag come with it.
