Map of Georgia, Vines and Pomegranates Backgammon Set — Handmade in Armenia

The map of Georgia is inlaid in pale wood at the centre of this Georgian backgammon set, its regions outlined and საქართველო lettered above it in the same pale wood, over a stippled ground. Grapevines run round the lid with leaves, hanging clusters and pomegranates cut in high relief, and a cut-out carry handle passes through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

Closed the other way, the wooden backgammon board shows sixty-four squares inlaid in two tones, and the vines do not stop: leaves, clusters and another pomegranate fill the panels to left and right of the squares.

Inside, a smaller map of Georgia is inlaid in each half with its regions lettered, between pale inlaid points with arrow tips; cut-out grips sit in the side rails with a dice recess at each corner. Thirty-two turned wooden checkers, a pair of dice and a fabric carrying bag are included.

Are the flowers in the border blossoms? They are pomegranates — round fruit with the calyx showing, one at each side among the vine leaves, with grape clusters beside them. The old listing called them blossoms; the photos show fruit. The map and lettering are pale wood set into the beech, not painted.
