Luxurious Chess Table with Crusader Pieces
Thirty-one kilos of carved wood standing on a single fluted column. The round top sits on a scrolled capital cut in the classical manner, the base steps out in rings to take the weight, and the whole thing is worked from solid timber rather than assembled from panels. Before anyone mentions the game, this is furniture — the piece a room arranges itself around.
The playing surface is framed twice: an interlace apron woven around the edge, and inside it a carved border of points running the rim with the coordinates set between them. On it stand the Crusaders. Thirty-two figural cast-metal pieces, a gilded brass host against a blackened one, every king, queen, mounted knight and castle-tower rook sculpted in medieval detail rather than turned on a lathe. Lift one and the weight is unmistakable.
What that gives you is a luxury chess table that is never put away, because there is nowhere to put it and no reason to. It stands at proper playing height with both armies set out, and it stays that way between games — which, in practice, is the single biggest reason a chess set actually gets used.
