A fluted column with a scrolled capital carries the round top of this luxury chess table, and two armies of figural Crusader pieces stand on it — one gilded, one black, cast in metal with mounted knights and castle rooks. This is the wooden chess table built like a piece of architecture. The column is fluted down its length and stands on a stepped round base; the capital rolls out in scrolls with a band of leaves beneath, and the top sits on it with a scale-carved rim, a woven interlace band round the apron and basket weave in the four segments outside the square inlaid field, where the coordinates sit on brass roundels.

The pieces are the reason to look twice: every king, queen, foot soldier and mounted knight is a cast figure in medieval dress, sixteen in a gold tone and sixteen in black, with towers for rooks. They have real heft in the hand and stand at chair height on a table that is never put away.
