This is the marble chess set most rooms can live with: no strong colour, just cream and brown stone doing what stone does. The brown squares are shot through with pale veins that run differently in every one, small brass diamonds march along the frame, and a brass mount sits at each corner. Cool, heavy and dead flat, it stays exactly where you set it.

The pieces stand on bases of the same two marbles — sixteen on cream, sixteen on brown — with crowned kings, horse-head knights and pierced rooks in a gold tone. Between games they lie in a satin tray inside the wooden box, one sleeve each, under a lid with a window and a slot handle.
