This is the wooden chess table for the room that does not want to be shouted at. There is no carving beyond the border, which is worked in a fine allover texture between a smooth outer rim and the field; the drawers sit in the apron on opposite sides and open on brass pendant pulls; the legs taper to the floor with a small block at the top of each.

The pieces — 16 light, 16 dark, turned in wood — live in the drawers, so the table is always set and always ready: a five-minute game before dinner, a long one after. It ships with the legs off, in a wooden crate, and bolts together in a few minutes.
