The board of this luxury chess set with storage sits on a carved fortress — brick walls, battlements, corner turrets with bronze cannons and sentinels standing in arched niches — with two drawers in the base for the 32 figural wooden pieces. The board is 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″, handmade in Armenia from beech and walnut.

This is the wooden chess set that is a sculpture first. Every brick is cut into the walls, a battlement runs round the top, a small cannon stands on each turret, and carved guards in pale wood keep watch from the arches, with a seated king in the central niche. The pieces are carved as figures — mounted knights, robed bishops, crowned kings — in light and dark wood.

Two drawers pull out of the base on ornate brass handles and take the whole army, so the fortress stays on the table and the pieces stay inside it. A medieval battle set on a medieval building — for the person who would rather own one remarkable thing than several good ones.
