Two wolves fill the lid of this carved wooden backgammon set — one lying in front with its paws out and its thick coat cut in fine strokes, the other standing watchful behind — with fir trees rising around them and a heavy scroll frame curling in from the corners. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

The frame is the deepest carving on the wooden backgammon board: broad acanthus scrolls that run out to the wavy edge and throw shadow over the scene. On the other outer face, a chequered panel of pale and dark squares sits between two panels of matching scrollwork.

The field inside is dark stained; its points are pale wood with a small arrow at each tip, there is a pale interlaced star in the middle of each half, and the corners hold long dice recesses. The board comes with thirty-two wooden checkers and a pair of dice.
