A four-pointed knot, its strands plaited over and under one another and finished in curling leaf tips, sits in a rope-ringed roundel at the centre of this carved backgammon set, with a diamond lattice cut across the rest of the lid and a plaited knotwork border running round the edge. Dark-stained beech, 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm / 11.8″ × 23.6″ closed, handmade in Armenia.

The other outer face of the wooden backgammon board carries a chequered panel of pale and dark squares between two lattice panels inside the same border. Inside, the dark field is inlaid with points in two pale tones and a pale knot roundel in each half, with carved scalloped rails at the ends and a long recess in each corner for the dice.

Thirty-two wooden checkers in two colours and a pair of dice go in with the board, which locks shut on brass hinges with one clasp at each end.
