Peacock and Sun Two-Face Backgammon Set with Handle — Handmade in Armenia

On one face of this carved backgammon set a peacock perches on a branch with its long tail hanging in a spotted train; on the other a sun blazes with a ring of flame-shaped rays — each in a rope-bordered oval on a cross-hatched ground, with acanthus scrolls curling in from the corners. A cut-out carry handle passes through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Peacock up or sun up, the closed wooden backgammon set always shows a carved scene — there is no plain chequered back on this one.

The pair return inside: a peacock drawn in fine line on pale inlay in one half and a pale inlaid sun with pointed rays in the other, between fleur-tipped inlaid points, with side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. Thirty-two beech and walnut checkers and dice are included.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the peacock's tail fanned under the sun? No — the old listing had a fanned tail beneath the sun on one scene, but the peacock perches with its tail hanging down, and the sun is on the opposite face of the board. The old copy also listed a carrying bag that is not photographed, so it is not included here.
