Branches curl into spirals and the roots plait themselves into a band of interlace: this Armenian backgammon set carries a Celtic tree of life in pale wood on a dark disc, leaves scattered through the tangle, the disc set in a stepped cartouche with a diamond-lattice border. Four sizes, 30 to 60 cm square (11.8″ to 23.6″), handmade in Armenia.

Underneath, the closed board offers a second face: an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares held by the same stepped frame and lattice ends.

Open, a pale inlaid knotwork roundel sits in each half between fleur-tipped inlaid points, with checker troughs along the rails and brass-toned hinges; the turned checkers in two woods, white dice and black carrying bag are all photographed.

How is this different from the other tree boards? The branches here spiral and the roots are woven into a knot band — the other tree discs have plain branches and roots. One board was photographed for all four sizes and the design is the same at each; only the 30 cm board is a true travel size. Checkers, dice and the bag are photographed with it.

How do I look after it? Wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth and brush the lattice and disc gently. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat; store it closed with the checkers inside, in the bag.
