Twelve wedges of red carpet, woven with cream and gold motifs, are set into the lid of this luxury Armenian backgammon set like the spokes of a wheel round a fluted sun boss — a zigzag ring outside them and a star in every corner, on a 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ walnut board, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that brings the carpet to the table: each wedge is a piece of woven fabric let into its own recess and framed by raised pale wood, the sun at the centre is carved in pointed flutes inside a beaded ring, and the ground round the wheel is left as plain pale walnut with a beaded band and a star boss at each corner. The wheel spans both halves, so the closed board shows a half-wheel.

The game side is all wood, pale and warm, with nothing on it but what the game needs: scored points ending in arrowheads, a flower head in the middle of each half, scalloped rails and a long trough at each end to hold the checkers and dice while the board is closed. Two brass clasps keep it shut.
