A diamond lattice is carved round the chessboard of this folding chess set, on a board with scalloped edges that closes on bronze clasps. It comes in three sizes — 30, 40 or 50 cm square (11.8″, 15.7″ or 19.6″) — handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 carved wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for someone who wants carving on the pieces as much as on the board. The lattice runs in a crisp diamond net round the whole frame, and the edge is cut in deep waves at each side. The pieces are carved rather than plainly turned — textured bodies, crowned kings and queens, knights with a real mane — in light and dark wood.

Choose the small board for the bag and the train, the middle one for the kitchen table, or the full-size one for the table that stays set up. All three fold in half with the pieces inside and close on bronze clasps. The starter set that does not look like one.
