Flame-shaped branches fan out to the rim and roots spread beneath: this Armenian backgammon set carries a pale-wood tree of life that fills its whole dark disc, set in a stepped cartouche with stippled panels and a diamond-lattice border round the lid. Four sizes, 30 to 60 cm square (11.8″ to 23.6″), handmade in Armenia.

Behind it the wooden backgammon set shows a second finished face, an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares inside the same lattice and stepped frame.

Open, pale fleur-tipped points lead to an inlaid knotwork roundel in each half, the rails carry a trough for the checkers and the hinges are brass-toned; the turned checkers in two woods, white dice and black carrying bag are all photographed.
