One army stands on white bases and the other on turquoise, both cast in a bronze finish, on a luxury chess set whose dark squares are pools of marbled turquoise epoxy set into pale wood. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia, the board doubling as a felt-lined case for all 32 pieces.

The chessboard runs across both outer faces of this wooden chess set, so closed it is a slim box with brass coordinate discs round the edge and opened flat one way it is the full field, each turquoise square its own pour, clouding from sea-green to deep blue and polished level with the wood. Turn it over and open it the other way for two black felt trays that hold the pieces.

The pieces are cast metal in a bronze finish with beaded and netted bodies, maned knights and castellated rooks — the two sides told apart by their bases, sixteen white and sixteen turquoise, each felted underneath. Everything travels inside its own board, in the bag.
