Each of the 32 pieces has its own pocket on this chess set: a silhouette cut into the frame, king-shaped for the king and knight-shaped for the knight, so the army lies in the board when the lid closes. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia, a Tree of Life on each outer face.

Closed, the lid of this wooden chess set shows a Tree of Life in a roundel — a leafy crown inside a knotted braid ring on one face, a tree whose roots mirror its branches on the other — each worked in relief against a darkened ground, with a diamond lattice in the corners and a leaf-chain border. The squares are pale and brown inlay, the coordinates set in dark discs with gold figures.

The pieces are turned wood with net-textured bodies, tall-finialled kings and maned knights, one side pale and the other dark-stained. Between games they lie in their own beds along the frame, and the board folds shut over them on brass clasps. No second game inside — the interior is the chessboard itself.
