Luxury Tree of Life Chess and Backgammon Table — Handmade in Armenia

A brass tree with its roots showing is set into this luxury chess and backgammon table at each end of the inlaid chessboard, on the lattice-carved apron and on every checker. The top unfolds into a backgammon field on cabriole legs: 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

Shut, it is a side table: an inlaid chessboard of pale and brown squares with letters and numbers round its edge, carved lattice on the top, apron and leg knees, a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top. Open, the wooden chess and backgammon table shows pale inlaid points tipped with arrowheads, a fluted sun-wheel in each half, a vine band along the rails and a recess at each corner for the dice cup.

The checkers are pale and dark wooden discs, each with a cast brass tree of life; the chess pieces are turned wood, sixteen pale and sixteen dark; the dice cup is turned wood with a dark lining. Four bolts free the legs for the plywood crate.

How does the table open? The top is hinged: swing it aside for the felt-lined compartment or unfold it flat across the frame for backgammon. Lattice and vine band are carved into the beech, the squares, points and sun-wheels are inlaid, and each tree — on the top, apron and checkers — is cast brass. Nothing is printed.
