A fine vine scroll runs round the chessboard of this travel chess set, small curls of line work in a single band, inside a moulded edge that waves in soft scallops on every side. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, stained walnut brown, with 32 wooden pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set for someone who wants carving without a scene. The scroll is cut shallow and even, so it reads as texture from across the room and as pattern from the chair; the coordinates are carved beside the two-tone squares, and two grooves follow the outline to the edge. It folds to 20 × 40 cm on bronze hinges with a clasp.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt for the 32 turned pieces — light and dark — so they ride in the closed board without a mark. Full-size squares at 40 cm, and light enough to carry to the neighbours and back.
