A ribbon scroll runs the whole way round the frame of this travel chess set, looping over itself like a wave, with a lattice panel at each end and a scalloped edge outside it all. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, stained red-brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set with the busiest border in its size. The scroll is cut in relief between two rope mouldings, the lattice fills the wider panels top and bottom, and the coordinates are carved beside the two-tone squares. It folds to 20 × 40 cm on bronze hinges with a clasp, and the outline waves on every side.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt for the 32 turned pieces — light and dark, taller than most at this size, with knights that lean forward. They go in the bag with the board; open it on a café table or at club night and the squares are full size.
