Two incised lines and a stippled band at each end are the whole decoration outside this classic chess and backgammon set; inside, a rayed sun wheel sits in a ring of leaves in each half. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 chess pieces, 32 checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that lets the grain do the talking. The frame is smooth dark-stained wood with the coordinates cut small beside the two-tone squares, the corners are square, and the edge is plain; it folds to 20 × 40 cm on bronze hinges with a clasp. Nothing to snag, nothing to date.

Open it and the backgammon field has pale points in each leaf and a sun wheel drawn in fine line work at the centre of each half — the one flourish on the board. Checkers in light and dark wood, the dice and the 32 turned chess pieces go in the bag. The all-rounder for a family that plays both games.
