A narrow band of fine texture and a ring of brass roundels frame the chessboard of this chess and backgammon set; inside, an eight-petal flower is carved in a disc at the centre of each half between pale points. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with pieces, checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set with the quietest carving in the range and the best coordinates: every letter and number sits on its own small brass roundel, so the board reads clearly from either chair. The border is a fine pebbled texture, the squares are two tones of wood, and the whole thing folds to 20 × 40 cm on bronze hinges with a clasp.

Open it and the backgammon field has pale points set into the dark wood, an arched recess at each end, and the flower disc in each half cut in relief. The 32 chess pieces are turned in light and dark wood and pack in the bag with the checkers and dice.
