Lattice and rope twist frame this chess set with storage: a diamond lattice carved round the border, a twisted-rope edge outside it, an inlaid field of dark and pale squares, and a felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. It is 50 × 50 × 11 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ × 4.3″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set for every day. The lattice runs the whole way round the field in a warm brown, the rope twist follows the outer edge, the coordinates sit on small brass roundels beside the squares, and the sides are worked in a fine dotted texture between four block feet. Nothing about it asks to be admired from a distance — it asks to be played.

The drawer slides out from the front on a brass pendant pull and holds all 32 turned pieces, 16 light and 16 dark, lying in felt-lined rows so nothing rattles. At 50 cm it sits on a side table, a desk or a shelf, and because the set lives inside it, it never has to come down.
