A full-size chessboard in the middle of a disc: this large round chess set is cut with sixteen straight sides, covered outside the squares in a dotted diamond lattice, and played with 32 carved pieces. 60 cm / 23.6″ across, handmade in Armenia from dark-stained beech, folding in half, with felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that turns a round table into a chess table. The square field floats in the middle of the disc with its coordinates on brass discs, and everything outside it is lattice — a fine diamond net with a dot punched at every crossing, cut right out to the sixteen-sided rim. The pieces carry their own carving: ribbed and leaf-cut bodies, crowned kings and queens, knights with a full mane, pale wood for one army and dark for the other.

Bronze hinges fold the disc into a half-round, clasps hold it shut, and the reverse opens onto two wells of black felt where the carved pieces lie between games. No second field under the lid — the whole object is given to chess, at a size that lets the army stand tall.
