Sixteen straight sides make the circle of this round chess set, a diamond lattice covers the whole top outside the squares, and a brass knot star sits in a round recess at each end. 50 cm / 19.6″ across, handmade in Armenia from beech in a mid-brown stain, folding in half, with 32 turned pieces, felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that takes a round table on its own terms. The square field floats in the middle of the disc with its coordinates on brass roundels, and everything outside it is lattice — a fine diamond net with a dot punched at every crossing, cut right out to the sixteen-sided rim. The stars are interlaced twelve-point castings in brass tone, each sunk into a recess lined with the same net.

It folds on bronze hinges into a half-round that shuts on a clasp, and both halves inside are lined in black felt, so the pieces ride inside the board itself. There is no second game under the lid — this one is chess only. The pieces are turned in pale wood and dark, with carved horse heads on the knights.
