Three crowns over two heads, sceptre and orb in the talons and Saint George on the breast shield: the Russian coat of arms is cut in relief on a stippled ground in the leaf-chain roundel of this Russian backgammon set, leaf sprays either side, a grip through the wavy top. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Every feather of the spread wings is a separate cut, and the stippled ground behind the eagle makes the whole emblem lift off the lid. On the other face an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares sits between two scroll brackets with stippled panels, and the grip is cut through both halves so the closed board carries like a case.

Inside, an outline map of Russia with its regions is incised into the middle of each half between the drop-shaped points, with shallow rests along the end rails and two plain hinges on the spine. It comes with 32 wooden checkers and a dice set, and two small clasps hold the front edge shut.
