Two armies of cast-metal warriors — spearmen, mounted riders, boyars, tsars with shields — stand on this luxury Russian chess set, a twelve-sided disc covered in dotted lattice with the double-headed eagle cast in metal at each end. 60 cm / 23.6″ across, handmade in Armenia from dark-stained beech, folding in half, with felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set with an army that tells a story. Every figure is cast full-length, in armour or robes, one side finished bright gold on pale bases and the other darkened on dark, so the two sides read from across the room. Under them the square field sits in the middle of the disc with brass discs for the coordinates, and everything outside it is a fine diamond net with a dot punched at every crossing, out to the twelve-sided rim.

The eagle — two heads, three crowns, sceptre and orb — is a small cast disc sunk into a round recess at each end, facing each player. The disc folds on bronze hinges into a half-round that shuts on clasps, both halves lined in black felt so the metal army rides inside the board.
