Cast bronze crowns on turned wooden pieces, and the double-headed eagle of Russia cast in metal at each end: this luxury chess and backgammon set is a dark lattice-carved board with a carry handle at each end and the eagle inlaid in pale wood in both halves inside. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″, handmade in Armenia, with checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set where the army outshines the board and the board does not mind. Each piece is turned in wood — pale for one side, dark for the other — with a cast bronze crown, finial, horse head or tower top over a cast collar at the foot. Under them the frame is a fine diamond net with a dot at every crossing, out to a waved edge, with the coordinates on brass discs.

The eagle outside is a small cast disc in a round recess; inside, it is inlaid in pale wood at the centre of each half of the backgammon field, between points tipped with a fleur-de-lis, and the handles show as lifting slots in the end rails. The board folds in half on bronze hinges and clasps.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? The crowns, finials and horse heads are cast bronze on turned wooden bodies, heavier than any wooden top. The board is dark-stained beech: lattice carved with a dot at every crossing, edge shaped in waves, handles cut through the frame, squares, points and inside eagles inlaid. The eagles outside are cast-metal discs in round recesses. Nothing is printed.
