A pierced band of knotwork runs round the base of this luxury round chess set with storage, basket weave and acanthus scrolls cover the top, and 32 gold-toned bronze figures stand on the inlaid field. Two felt-lined drawers hold them all. The board is 60 cm / 23.6″ across, 11 cm / 4.3″ high, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set for the middle of the room. The interlace round the side is cut right through, so light passes between the strands; above it the four segments outside the square field are carved as woven strips with a fan of acanthus at each corner, inside a beaded rim. The coordinates sit on brass roundels and the board stands on small brass feet.

The pieces are the reason for the price: cast figures in gold-toned bronze — crowned kings and queens, mounted knights, tower rooks, soldiers with shields and spears — one side on pale wooden bases, the other on dark. Two drawers, one each side, slide out on brass pulls and take the full army on felt.
