Deep acanthus scrolls fill the four segments of this round chess set with storage, curling out from the corners of the inlaid field towards a beaded rim, with a curved felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. It is 60 cm / 23.6″ across and 11 cm / 4.3″ high, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set with the boldest relief in the round family. Each segment holds a mirrored pair of scrolls, cut deep enough to throw a shadow, with a leaf between them and a dotted ground behind; a bead moulding runs round the edge and the sides are worked in a fine allover texture. The square field has a warm red-brown border, brass coordinate roundels and dark and pale squares.

Under the board the drawer follows the curve of the base and slides out on a brass pendant pull, lined in felt and sized for the whole set — 16 light and 16 dark turned pieces. The playing squares are full size for a 60 cm board, so the carving never gets in the way of a long game.

Are the scrolls carved, or moulded and applied? Carved. The scrolls, the leaves and the dotted ground are cut down into the beech in each segment, and the bead moulding and the textured sides are worked into the same piece of wood. The field is inlaid, and the coordinates are small brass roundels set into the border.
