The border of this luxury chess set plays a quiet trick on your eyes: it looks like twisted rope, coil after coil, but every strand is carved from solid beech. It is an old carver's exercise — making hard wood look soft and wound — and here it frames a full 19.6" / 50 cm chessboard like a ship's line around a deck.
