Two armies of cast metal warriors stand on this luxury chess set, with a cast pomegranate set into a round recess at each end of a lattice-carved frame. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained dark, folding shut over a felt-lined space for the pieces.

This is the wooden chess set with the metal army. One side is finished in bronze, the other black: crowned kings, veiled queens, helmeted bishops, mounted knights, castle-tower rooks and a line of foot soldiers with shields, each on a patterned cast base. The diamond lattice covers the whole frame with a dot at every crossing, the coordinates sit on brass discs, and the outline waves in scallops to the corners.

The pomegranate at each end is cast in metal too — split open, seeds showing, a leaf beside it — sunk into a round recess on a star-stippled ground. Open the clasps and the inside is lined in black felt to hold all 32 figures for the bag.
