Inside the frame the field is inlaid in walnut and maple, with carved scrollwork at each corner, a fine lattice along the border and small brass studs marking the coordinates.

Underneath it, a drawer glides out and takes all 32 hand-carved pieces. That is the practical half of a chess set with storage: nothing sits beside the board, nothing goes into a bag, and the set stays ready on the table because putting it away takes one movement. At 23.6" / 60 cm across with clearly defined squares, it plays as well as it looks.
