A fleur-de-lis is carved in relief into each of the four corners of this octagonal chess set with storage, and a drawer beneath the board takes all 32 wooden pieces. It is 50 × 50 × 11 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ × 4.3″ across the points, handmade in Armenia from beech and walnut.

This is the wooden chess set for the side table by the window. Cutting the corners off the square leaves four triangles, and a big lily fills each one, standing off a dotted ground with a beaded line round the rim; the coordinates sit on small brass roundels, and the eight sides of the box are worked in a fine texture down to the feet.

The drawer slides out on a brass pendant, and the 32 pieces — carved in light and dark wood — go in and out in one movement, so the board is never half-cleared. Formal enough for a study, friendly enough for a Sunday.
