The frame of this travel chess set is carved in leafy scrollwork, with Mount Ararat in relief above the cut-out carry handle. The board is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained a grey-brown walnut tone, with 32 wooden chess pieces in a fitted tray and a carrying bag.

A wooden chess set that is easy to carry and hard to put away. Scrolls and leaves run round the whole frame in relief over a dotted ground, the peaks stand out in the arch above the handle with rays around them, and the coordinates are carved beside the squares. The edge is cut in scallops that follow the scrolls.

Inside, a black fitted tray holds every one of the 32 pieces in its own slot — kings, knights and pawns turned in light and dark wood. Close the bronze clasps, take the handle and it goes to the next house in one hand. The smaller brother of our full-size carved-frame board, for players with less table.
