Ararat's two peaks rise across the lid of this luxury Armenian backgammon table, their snow caps inlaid in pale wood and everything else carved: a church on the slope below, fields and furrows running to the front edge, and a frame of leafy scrolls curling round the whole scene. On cabriole legs, 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

Closed, the wooden backgammon table is a carved side table: a scrolled cartouche and leaf sprays on the apron, a carved leaf at each knee, and a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top. Unfolded, the field is inlaid — pale points with arrowhead tips, a fluted sun-wheel ringed with scrolls in each half — with a scalloped rail at each end and a recess in every corner for the dice cup.

It plays with pale and dark wooden checkers, a dice cup and two dice, and the four cabriole legs unbolt from the frame for shipping.

Carved — the peaks, church, fields and scroll frame are relief cut into the beech top, with only the snow caps let in as pale inlay; the points and sun-wheels inside are inlaid the same way. Swing the hinged top aside for the felt-lined compartment or unfold it flat for the game.
