Thirty-two pierced bronze pieces stand on this luxury chess and backgammon set, a dark-stained board woven edge to edge in carved basket weave, with a carry handle cut through each end. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set with a metal army on a woven field. Every strip of the weave rides over and under the next in relief, with a stippled ground in the gaps and a waved edge round it; the coordinates sit in brass discs beside the inlaid squares. The pieces are cast in openwork bronze with a gold-tone finish on turned wooden bases, pale for one side and dark for the other.

Under the lid the second game is already laid out — a backgammon field with pale points, a carved flower wheel in each half and a trough for the wooden checkers along either side, the handles showing as lifting slots in the rails. Both games full size; one grip at each end to move them.
