Every part of the frame outside the squares is cut with a diamond lattice on this chess and backgammon set, out to a waved edge and through a carry handle at each end. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 turned pieces, 32 checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that catches the light from every seat. The lattice is carved as crossing grooves with a raised diamond between each, so the frame throws small shadows that move as you do; the coordinates are cut into the rim beside the inlaid squares, and the outline waves in scallops. The 32 pieces are turned in two woods, pale and dark.

The handles are cut clean through both ends. Open it on the bronze hinges and the backgammon field is inside — pale points with leaf finials, a flower wheel in each half, a trough for the checkers on each side and lifting slots in the rails.
