Backgammon Set Hand Carved - Horse at the Gallop
A horse at full gallop is mostly a problem of legs. Get one wrong and the whole animal looks like it is falling over; get them right and a piece of static wood appears to be moving. On this hand-carved wooden backgammon set the horse runs inside a deep oval frame at the centre of the lid, mane and tail carried back, with flowing scrollwork around the frame and a braided border closing the whole thing in.
There is a reason horses turn up on so many boards across the Caucasus, and it is not only that they are beautiful. Backgammon is a running game — the entire object is to get your side home before the other one does, and every roll is a stretch of ground. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field turns into exactly that race. Carry this handmade backgammon board in by its cut-out handle and set it down; the horse has been running on the lid for years and has never once been caught.
