This is the marble chess set for a modern room. The grey squares drift between pale and charcoal like polished slate, the white ones are veined faintly, and the frame round them is white stone with nothing on it but the coordinates — each letter and number cast on its own brass ornament. Cool to the hand, heavy, dead flat.

The pieces are openwork castings, crowned kings and horse-head knights, sixteen in a bright gold tone on white marble bases and sixteen darker on grey; against a neutral field they read sharply from across a room. They store in the fitted box between games.
