A big board for the two games of the Russian table: this chess and backgammon set carries the double-headed eagle cast in metal at each end of a dark lattice-carved frame, a carry handle at each end, and the eagle inlaid in pale wood in both halves inside. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″, handmade in Armenia, with checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that makes the frame the ornament. A fine diamond net with a dot at every crossing covers everything outside the field, running to an edge that waves in scallops; the eagle sits at each end in a small cast disc sunk into the net; the coordinates are on brass discs; and the 32 pieces are turned in pale wood and dark, tall enough for squares this size.

Turn it over for nardy: pale points tipped with a fleur-de-lis run in from each end, the eagle sits inlaid in pale wood at the heart of each half, and the two handles come through the end rails as lifting slots. Bronze hinges fold it to half its width, and clasps hold it shut for the shelf.
