Two lions rear up either side of the crowned shield on this Georgian backgammon set, Saint George spearing the dragon on the shield and the motto ძალა ერთობაშია on a ribbon beneath — the full coat of arms, carved on a cross-hatched ground inside a rope-rimmed roundel with leaf scrolls and an oval grip through the wavy-edged lid. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

The reverse gives you the chequered panel in pale and darker squares between two carved grape-and-leaf cartouches, the grip beneath and two small brass-toned clasps at the front; a fabric bag with a strap handle takes the closed board.

Inside, an outline map of Georgia with its regions is incised into each half, lettered GEORGIA, between rows of incised points; it plays with 32 ringed wooden checkers in pale and dark wood and two dice, on ornamental brass-toned hinges with scalloped bar edges and rail troughs.

How do I look after it? Brush the lions, the shield and the cross-hatched ground with a soft dry brush and wipe the flat faces and the checkers with a dry cloth. Keep the board out of direct sun and away from heat; close the clasps before lifting it by the grip.
