St George on horseback under a crown — the coat of arms of Georgia — is carved at each end of this Georgian travel chess set, inside a frame of leaf scrolls on a dotted ground. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set for a Georgian household, or for anyone who knows what that country has given the game. The arms sit in a shield at the top and bottom of the border, scrolls curl out to each corner, the coordinates are carved beside the two-tone squares, and the outline waves in soft scallops. It folds to 20 × 40 cm on bronze hinges with two clasps.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt for the 32 turned pieces — light and dark — so they ride in the closed board without a mark. At 40 cm the squares are full size; open it on a kitchen table in Tbilisi or a desk anywhere else.
