Floral scrolls are carved in relief round the whole frame of this travel chess set, with a cut-out carry handle at each end and black felt inside. It is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained a deep walnut brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for the player who wants the dark, serious one. Flowers, leaves and curling stems run unbroken round the field on a dotted ground, cut deep enough to hold shadow, and the edge follows them in soft waves. The squares are left plain and pale against the dark frame, so the carving frames the game rather than crowding it.

Both halves are lined in black felt, and the 32 pieces — turned in light and dark wood, the knights with carved heads — ride inside without a rattle. Close the bronze clasps, lift it by the handle and it is a case; open it and it is the best thing on the table.
