Fleur-de-lis scrolls are carved in deep relief round the chessboard of this travel chess and backgammon set — a square, dark-stained board with chess outside and backgammon inside. It is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces, 32 checkers, a dice set and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that looks like a piece of pierced ironwork from across the room. The lilies and scrolls link into a continuous band on all four sides, cut so deep that the ground disappears into shadow, and a plain moulded edge holds it all in. The squares are pale against the dark frame and the coordinates are carved beside them.

Open the bronze clasps and each half of the backgammon board carries a round flower ornament in pale wood, with pale points running to the bar. The 32 chess pieces are turned in light and dark wood with carved detail on the crowns and knights; the checkers and dice pack in the bag with them. The soft-looking board for a household with a competitive streak.
